Spread over an area of 1200 square km, the park lies amid dense Sal forests and hilly ravines. Approximately 110 species of trees can be found here. Corbett National Park is most famous for its Tigers, but it also has a wide variety of other wildlife including Leopards, Jungle Cats, Sloth Bears, Himalayan Black Bear, Jackals, Deer, Himalayan Palm Civet, Black napped Hare, Elephants, Langurs and Wild Boar. Along the banks of the Ramganga river lives the Gharial and the Mugger Crocodile.
A total of 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and around 580 species of birds can be found here. Of course one is not so lucky to be able to see or recognize all of them in one visit. The best way to view this was assortment of wildlife is by Jeep Safari. These can be booked from Ramnagar, KMVN Tourist Lodge and some other travel agencies. Though only a few get lucky enough to see a tiger, your best bet is the deer infested grassland known as the Maidan where tigers may come looking for dinner. You can also explore Corbett National Park on elephant back. These Elephant Safaries can be booked at Dhikala and Bijrani.
The best way to get to the park is by road. Ramnagar is well connected by a regular bus service from Nainital and Ranikhet. Ramnagar is also the closest railway station. Phoolbagh in Pantnagar is the nearest airport.
If you want to soak up the complete Corbett magic and stay within the park there are three options available to you - Dhikala, Gairal and Bijrani. However if you prefer to be more comfortable then staying at Ramnagar is a better option.
The time to visit Corbett National Park is from mid November to mid June, as the park remains closed from November 15th to June 15th due to heavy monsoons.
It is mandatory for all visitors to Corbett National Park to obtain permits from the Park Administration Center at Ramnagar. It is also advisable to reach the entry gate at least half an hour in advance as it takes time to complete entry formalities.
