The north-western fringes support dry and mixed deciduous forests. Here is set the Kabini Reservoir, home to the elephant and the gaur, besides innumerable large mammals. Bandipur offers a variety of habitats, thus making it the ideal home for diverse life forms.
The best time to visit Bandipur is between April and October. This is when the breeding cycle of the park's birds is at its peak and Bandipur is a delightful mélange of feathery colors and sounds then. You can spot the tiger, leopard, chital, peafowl, quail, hornbill, barking deer, partridge, ibis, sambar, giant squirrel and sloth bear here.
You can do the standard elephant-back safari of Bandipur, or even go around the park in your own car - roads have been built close to watering holes and provide great vantage points to explore the wildlife of Bandipur.
A nearby attraction is the Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary, set in the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu.
