History of Western India
History of western India for long was seen in context with either the north Indian or south Indian history. All the major empires of this region extended their empire much beyond the geographical confines of Western India and became trans-regional powers in themselves. Some of the major empires that ruled over this fertile land were Gurjars, Pratihars, Marathas, and many more like that. In fact, it was the rise of Marathas under the guidance of Shivaji that western India came into its own in Indian history. Marathas, for long remained the headache of not only the Mughals but the Europeans also. During the struggle for Indian independence, western India remained in the forefront and produced able leaders like Dadabhai Naurojee, Gopalkrishna Gokhale, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and most importantly Mahatmadas Karamchand Gandhi.
