Tourist Attractions of Rajasthan

Jaipur: The Pink City of Jaipur was founded by the Kachhwaha ruler Raja Sawai Jai Singh II (1693-1743).

Jaipur is known as the "Pink City", because the walls and buildings were painted pink in honor of the visit of the Prince of Wales, in 1876.

Situated about 250 km from Delhi, Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is one of the three stops on the popular Golden Triangle Tour of North India. The other two being Delhi and Agra. Easily accessible by road, rail and air, Jaipur tourists travel from all over the world to Jaipur to see its colorful sights, which include the Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Amer Fort, and busy markets, which offer artifacts made by master craftsmen. Udaipur: Udaipur was established by the Sisodia dynasty and the city is named after the Sisodia ruler Maharana Udai Singh. Known for its shimmering Lake Pichola, on which are situated two of the most exotic palaces in the world, Udaipur is an oasis of beauty in the midst of the desert. The Jag Mandir or the Lake palace is made of marble and granite, while the Jag Mandir is made of red sandstone with a marble dome. This fairytale city has been the location where several Hollywood movies have been shot.

Jodhpur: Ruled by the Rathore dynasty, who continue to live in a part of the majestic Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur is a majestic city set on the edge of the Thar desert. The Grand Mehrangarh Fort that overlooks the city with its blue-walled houses, The Jaswant Thada and the Mandore Garden are tourist attractions in Jodhpur. The desert Oasis of Osian, known for its Hindu and Jain temples, is near the city of Jodhpur. You can also enjoy camel safari rides around Jodhpur.

Jaisalmer: Located in the west of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer was an important trading center where camel caravans stopped before heading across the Thar Desert. Established by Bhatti Rajput Rawal Jaisal in 1156, the city of Jaisalmer is best known for its golden fortress, built of sandstone. There are some intricately carved Jain temples, and mansions or havelis that display the fine craftsmanship of Jaisalmer. The sand dunes at Sam, near Jaisalmer are a popular tourist attraction where people gather to watch the sunset. This is where the Jaisalmer desert festival is held every year.

Bikaner: Established by Rao Bikaji, a Rathore Prince, in 1488, the city of Bikaner has lots to offer a tourist. The Junagarh Fort, Gajner Palace, Gajner wildlife sanctuary, Lalgarh Palace, several museums, the Deshnok Temple and Camel Breeding Farm in Bikaner are interesting tourist attractions in Bikaner.

Chittorgarh: Famous for having been attacked repeatedly during medieval times, Chittorgarh is known for the valor of its fighters and the beauty of its women. It was attacked by Ala-ud-din Khilji, the Sultan of Delhi in 1303, because he fell in love with the beautiful Rani Padmini. He was unable to possess her however, for she and her women immolated themselves in the Rajput custom of Jauhar, when Chittor was defeated. The siege of Chittorgarh by Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, in 1535 and by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, in 1568, were also marked by great bravery and sacrifice. Chittorgarh was returned to its rulers by the Mughal emperor Jahangir in 1616. The Vijay Stambh or Victory Tower in Chittorgarh is an impressive monument in Chittorgarh.

Ajmer: This pilgrimage town is visited by thousands of devotees who come to pray at the Dargah or tomb of the Sufi Saint Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chisti. The saint's death anniversary is an important event every year, when the rush of pilgrims is at its greatest. Ajmer is the nearest town on the route to Pushkar, known for its annual camel fair and an important Hindu pilgrimage destination.

Pushkar: Pushkar is known for its holy Pushkar Lake where devotees gather to pray at the Brahma Temple and bathe in the lake during Karthik Purnima every year. Pushkar is the site of an annual camel and livestock fair, which attracts traders and tourists who come to buy and sell camels and participate in this colorful fair.

Ranthambore: Located near Sawai Madhopur, Ranthambore national park is known for its majestic tigers, which can be seen in the 392 sq kms of desert vegetation and scrub jungle of this wildlife sanctuary.

Sariska National Park: This national park in Rajasthan, which has a core area of 480 sq kilometers, is known for its population of tigers, and deer and is situated 36 km from Alwar.

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary: The Keolodeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur is known for its population of native and migratory birds. Avid birdwatchers travel from all over the world to observe the feathered wonders of Bharatpur. The park is a world heritage site, that you will enjoy seeing, on your India Travel itinerary through Rajasthan, if you're a nature lover.
